How MySpace Helped Drake Reach 6 God Status

MySpace is a blast from the past, one that many popular musical artists today would rather forget about. Without this social media platform Drake may not be the same popular Toronto rapper that he is though. Many mistakenly believe that Drizzy’s rise to fame happened because of the 8 years that the rapper spent playing Jimmy Brooks on Degrassi High: The Next Generation but the truth is that MySpace helped Drake get discovered and gave his musical career a big boost.

During an interview with W Magazine Drake discussed that period in his life, explaining “That was part of the reason I was kicked off the show. Back then, I’d spend a full day on set and then go to the studio to make music until 4 or 5 a.m. I’d sleep in my dressing room and then be in front of the cameras again by 9 a.m. Eventually, they realized I was juggling two professions and told me I had to choose.” MySpace was new territory for artists, and Drake talked about the platform and how he used it. “Initially, I think I just didn’t know what would happen. I was this rapper with a little bit of buzz, the internet was taking over, and I didn’t know the power of the internet at that point. The true power of social networking and the things we are so emmersed in now. There wasn’t an artist that had been 100% birthed from that outlet.”

Jas Prince Speaks On Drake In Text Interview

Jas Prince recently did an interview with Allindstrom.com. In the interview Jas was questioned about many topcis including: Business side of music, first job in the music industry, and of course Drake. See what Jas had to say about Drake after the jump.

Where did you first hear of Drake? Who brought him across your plate?

“MYSPACE! I always browse through the internet lookin for somethin new. I found him myself. I sent him a message lettin him know who I was and that I wanted to work with him, get his music to some people I know.”

How did you pitch him to Wayne?

“At first I was tellin him about him like, “Yo, you really need to check this dude Drake out,” and Wayne wasn’t tryin to hear it. Then one day while leavin the Galleria, I just threw his CD in and let it play. He was like, “Wait..who is this?,” and I was like “Drake…the guy I been tellin you about.” Wayne told me to book him on the next flight to Houston.”
