Aside from Beyoncé’s stellar performance, one of the most-talked-about moments at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards was when Drake presented Rihanna with the Video Vanguard Award and got very publicly friend-zoned once again. After admitting he’s been in love with her “since I’m 22 years old,” Drake gave RiRi her Moonman statue and went in for a kiss—but Rihanna was not having it. (Didn’t she tell you that she was a savage?). Several people on Twitter even noticed she might have scolded him for trying to take their not-so-secret relationship public. (Not the time, Drake!)

This isn’t the first time poor Drizzy has gotten a literal swerve from Rihanna. Most of their confusing relationship has consisted of him professing his love for her and never getting any sort of reciprocation back. Below, all the times Drake had absolutely no chill when it came to Rihanna.
When they were first spotted together and Rihanna said they were just friends, but Drake insisted on telling the world they had been together.
After their first hookup took place at the Lucky Strike bowling alley in New York City, Rihanna was quick to quash the rumors that they were actually together. In a 2009 interview with Angie Martinez, the singer laughed when she was asked if she was dating Drake. “Not even a little bit?” Martinez asked. “Nah,” Rih responded.
On the other hand, Drake, in a revealing 2010 interview with The New York Times, admitted he felt used like “a pawn” by the pop star. And when he filled out a questionnaire for XXL and said that it was “semi-true” that he once dated Rihanna. And a year later, he continued to vent about it to Elle.
When Drake dropped her name into one of his lyrics.
Even though he had already hinted at his relationship with RiRi in his song “Fireworks,” Drake dropped any sort of subtlety in his song with Rick Ross, “Made Men,” and called her out by name—twice. “One of my baddest women ever, I call her Rihanna/But that’s ’cause her name is Rihanna!”
When he compared her to the devil.
In 2014, during what appeared to be a rough patch in their relationship, Drake featured some questionable visuals during a performance of “Days in the East” in Toronto, as he flashed images of Rihanna’s face mixed in with the number 666. He later referenced the move in a tweet, saying it wasn’t a dig to his former friend with benefits, but nobody really believed him anyway.
When Rihanna first ducked away from a kiss during a show.
At Rihanna’s Miami concert for her Anti tour, Drake showed up for a rendition of their hit collaboration, “Work.” During the middle of their song, Drake, of course, couldn’t help himself and went in for a kiss, perhaps hoping Rihanna would cave in front of the thousands of people in the audience who want them to get together almost as much as Drake does. But nope, she turned her face away and gave him a friendly hug instead.

When Drake asked Rihanna to be the mother of his child.
Drake was obviously psyched when Rihanna flew in from Europe for a surprise appearance at his OVO Fest in Toronto. But then, again, he went a little too over the top as he publicly thanked her for coming in front of the audience. “You showed up two nights in a row for my city,” he said to her. “You might have to go half on a baby.”
When he congratulated her for her Video Vanguard Award with a huge billboard.
Again, subtlety doesn’t seem to be a word in Drake’s dictionary.
When after his VMAs misread, Drake still shared an intimate photo of the two of them on his Instagram.
You would think that after Rihanna sent him a clear sign that she wanted to keep things on the DL, Drake would’ve gotten the message. But in the wee hours of Monday morning (possibly after a lot of celebrating took place), Drake posted a cute, very couple-y photo of him and Rih, congratulating her on her big night. Will he ever learn?
